North Oregon Coast Offers Trolley, Robert Gray, More History

(Astoria, Oregon) – Numerous history programs are popping up on the north Oregon coast, just as Astoria announces its fall schedule for its charming little trolley.
The Garibaldi Museum will be presenting one final free viewing of the recently released documentary about the Port of Garibaldi on Sunday, October 10. The film chronicles the 100 years of the Port's existence and features interviews with many past and present community members and Port officials.
The free showing of the film will take place October 10 at 2 p.m. in the museum's community room. This will be the last free screening of the film for the year. Fort Clatsop is launching a new installment of its “In Their Footsteps” lecture series, with “Tragic First Contact at Tillamook Bay; the Story of Marcus Lopez, Cabin Boy.”
The Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Fort Clatsop will host Daniel Haag, presenting “Tragic First Contact at Tillamook Bay; the Story of Marcus Lopez, Cabin Boy” on Sunday, October 17, at 1 p.m.
In 1788, Captain Robert Gray on the American brig, the Lady Washington, spent a few days exploring Tillamook Bay in his quest to find the western end of the fabled Northwest Passage. His West African cabin boy, Marcus Lopez was killed there. Haag will discuss Lopez' life and tragic death. 92343 Fort Clatsop Road, Astoria, Oregon. 503-861-2471 ext. 214.
Astoria's nifty trolley has announced its fall schedule, running from noon to 6 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. It’s $1 per trip, and the average round trip takes about 50 to 55 minutes. You can catch the trolley at the following locations:
Astoria Red Lion Inn; Foot of Bay Street - Maritime Memorial; Foot of 3rd Street - Columbia House Condominiums; Foot of 6th Street; Foot of 9th Street; Foot of 11th Street; Foot of 14th Street; Foot of 17th Street - Maritime Museum; Foot of 20th Street - Railroad Depot; Foot of 33rd Street – Safeway, and the foot of 39th Street - Pier 39.
Passengers can ride as long as they like each time they board, or pay $2 to ride all day long. The schedule is dependent on weather, however. Schedule ends on December 20.

The trolley can be rented for $100 an hour for private groups looking for something unique. For information: call 503-325-6311.
Another special, more modern event happens on October 13 in Astoria as SeaPort Airlines hosts an open house. It happens at the Astoria-Warrenton Airport from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event will feature wine and beer tasting, hors d'oeuvres, and a raffle to win round-trip tickets on SeaPort. The company's new Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft will be on display for public viewing.
Rogue brewery is expected to have tastings in addition to Troon Vineyard and Prodigal Son Brewery and Pub.
