Series of Storms to Hit Oregon Coast Next Two Days

(Oregon Coast) – There's a whole lotta wind coming this way, as well as stormy seas, rain and maybe a bit of flooding. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a few warnings and watches which essentially mean big storm systems along the Oregon coast through Wednesday.

A wind warning is in effect until noon on Monday, changing to a high wind watch from then until Tuesday afternoon. The NWS said south winds of 30 to 40 mph and gusts around 65 may be possible on beaches and headlands.

A second front will bring more winds and storm conditions on late Monday and Tuesday, this time with a bigger punch. Gusts up to 70 or 80 mph could be hitting beaches and headlands, while coastal cities will get a little less, perhaps with sustained winds around 40 mph.

“Winds may begin to decrease on the south Washington and north Oregon coast Tuesday afternoon,” the NWS said.

Locations include Yachats, Newport, Lincoln City, Cape Foulweather, Florence, Astoria, Cannon Beach, Seaside, Manzanita, Pacific City, Netarts, Raymond, Long Beach, Tillamook and Depoe Bay.

“A high wind warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring,” the NWS said.

The coast range and Willapa Hills of Washington are under a flood watch, along with some of the coastal rivers - from Tuesday morning through Wednesday afternoon. Heavy rain is expected to develop along those areas, bringing several inches, which could cause creeks and small rivers to flood Tuesday and possibly Wednesday.

“Significant rises are expected on larger coastal rivers, but they are starting off low,” the NWS said. “Windspread flooding is not expected on larger main stem rivers at this time.”

This likely translates to no major problems along usual flood spots like in the Tillamook area, although some high seas and rain may cause some flooding along 101 just south of Seaside.

The NWS also issued a storm watch for seafaring vessels on the Pacific Ocean off the Oregon coast. This warning seems to indicate large swells, possibly in the 20-foot range, around late Tuesday.
