(Newport, Oregon) - Every second Saturday of the month, the beachside neighborhood of Nye Beach has been holding the Nye Beach Stroll: a collection of specials in stores, street performers, art demonstrations, and all kinds of ways to amuse yourself or enrich yourself. This month's Nye Beach Stroll takes place amidst newly dressed up streets, with canvas banners recently installed throughout the district that depict one aspect or another of the historical section of Newport.
This month’s Nye Beach Stroll happens August 14 – always the second Saturday of the month. It takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

It is an informal and casually organized event, put together by the Nye Beach Merchants Association. It’s always a loose conglomeration of things to do, taste, see and buy: it always depends on what retailers decide, what musicians show up and whatever other surprises may pop up.
At some of the strolls, one local business owner set up a painted, cardboard booth which charged money for poetry recitations. You plopped a quarter in, and she would suddenly open the booth and read a poem.
Street performers dot the corners, sometimes with their instrument cases open for donations. Linda Briggs, one of the organizers of the event, said it’s simply whoever loves to play.
“We invite anyone to come on down and perform,” Briggs said.
Some of the retails shops offer specials just for that day, while gallery and shop Artsake often has art demonstrations. Briggs herself did a demo on bead-making, and other demonstrations have included making jewelry.
Wine tasting events have also been part of the varied roster.
Meanwhile, the Nye Beach district is celebrating the return of the massive canvass banners that adorn the streetlights throughout Nye Beach. They created these last year, all made by local artists. They hung on the streets of the area throughout the summer and fall, and then were taken down and auctioned off later in the year.

“We brought in $2000, which was donated to the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts,” Briggs said.
This year, 31 local artists created the banners, which include cute little slogans or depictions of the area, such as the one that reads “Surf Nye Beach.”
