Manzanita

(Nehalem Bay, Oregon) – The Nehalem Bay area, on the north Oregon coast, presents one of the more intricate and intriguing set of delights on the area, albeit rather clandestine in many ways. With more than a few legends of things mystical, buried treasure, crashed ships and even ghost stories, along with varied aspects of shopping, dining and beachy fun, it has numerous layers to it that allow even the regular to the area to never become jaded or bored with it.

The bay area stretches some almost 15 miles – from Manzanita to the end of Rockaway Beach, and including the little burghs of Nehalem and Wheeler. It’s a mixture of coastal bay, beach, forest, mountains and other environments that never cease to surprise. Yet at first glance, the bayside portion of the area turns off many tourists who don’t see the beach on bayfront towns Wheeler and Nehalem, and they zip through to either Manzanita or Rockaway Beach.

Like the multifarious Nehalem Bay itself, its lodgings are a special and diverse breed. Magnificent vacation rental agencies with tons of homes all over the area. Small, cuddly but classy places to stay with numerous interesting amenities. Large, sprawling facilities that accommodate dozens. Then there are major surprises, like the B&B that is a real castle, or the ancient hotel refurbished into something unforgettable.

Rockaway Beach, Wheeler, Manzanita – and lodgings in nearby places, like Oceanside, Arch Cape, Cannon Beach and Seaside – bring something more than a little special and different to the hotel, motel, vacation rental and bed and breakfast world of the Oregon coast.

This sampler begins in Manzanita, heads south to Rockaway, then points out the places just south and north of the area and their lodging highlights.
