Bell
Buoy of Seaside/ Buoy's Best Fish House
That
ancient sign - that quaint bit of old time Americana on
the roadside of 101 in Seaside - is also a sign of great
grub. It's famous as a fresh seafood market, but last year
Bell Buoy added a much-lauded restaurant: Bell Buoy's Best
Fish House. There, you can grab all manner of seafood melts,
cocktails, shooters and baskets of yummy stuff. Let your
tummy bask in the warm glow of excellent melts with local
Dungeness crab, shrimp, smoked salmon and oysters, as well
as delicious seafood cocktails of a large variety. All is
quite reasonably priced. And whatever you do, DON'T miss
their tuna melts! 1800 S. Roosevelt Dr., Seaside. (503)
738-6348. You can order this yummy stuff online as well,
at www.bellbuoyofseaside.com.
Flashback
Malt Shoppe & Gifts
It's
the ice cream shop so good Elvis (apparently) came back
from the dead to hang out here. In the midst of a load of
50's memorabilia and kitschy fun, the Flashback revels in
history and the charms of culture from bygone days. Their
gift shop hawks quite the selection of curio items from
pop culture.
Ice
cream and milk shakes are the big attraction here, however,
with a huge variety of all. Smoothies are especially yummy
as well, with fruity varieties that tingle the palate while
freezing the back of your parched throat. They're made with
real fruit, too.
Their
menu of sundaes is large and intriguing, with one scoop
of their regular sundaes going for $2.50 and two scoops
going for $3.50.
Then
there are their "fancy sundaes," which feature
incarnations of banana splits that include various flavors
of ice cream, different sauce coverings, as well as a "Hot
Fudge Brownie" take on the sundae - all around $4.50.
Their
specialty sundaes include toppings you can't get in the
regular sundaes. The Dusty Road comes with a scoop of vanilla
and chocolate, hot caramel sauce and crushed malted milk
balls for $3.75. The Black & White features a scoop
of chocolate ice cream covered with marshmallow topping
and a scoop of vanilla covered with chocolate syrup, for
$3.50. Others in this genre are capped with a variety of
syrups, sauces and goodies, and have names like "Turtle
Sundae," "Seaside Delight" or a graham cracker-covered
little ditty called "S'Mores Sundae." 318 Broadway.
(503) 738-6614.
Zinger's
Homemade Ice Cream
Dive
into scrumptious homemade ice cream - plus they make their
own fudge. Of note is their take on chocolate with malted
milk balls in it. It's quite a mouthful. Or the powerful
fresh fruit taste of the marionberry, using real Marion
County berries. Also spectacular are the other fruit flavors,
such as the tangy (and very real) strawberry, and the seriously
wowing (but only periodically available) mango. All the
fruity ones have chunks of the real thing inside, waiting
to surprise. Sugar free and diabetic options are available,
but mostly Zinger's specializes in frozen excess. Singles
are actually the size of two scoops and doubles - well,
they're twice as large. 210 Broadway. (503) 738-3939. www.zingersicecream.com

Fultano's
Pizza
Gourmet Italian and a Family Price. This
one delivers to local hotels, and they feature slices for
lunch. There's a special thin crust recipe that's especially
tasty, crunchy and yet still tender in a way that manages
to combine both those latter qualities seamlessly.
There are many of the standbys, as well as
gourmet varieties like the Margherita (garlic and herb olive
oil, three cheeses, red onion and more), a Greek-themed
specialty, a Goat Cheese pizza, and specialties with Teriyaki
Chicken, Linguica, BBQ Chicken and a variety of seafood
selections. One item features a distinctive sausage with
mashed grapes for the sauce, providing a subtle, sweet tang.
The sausage is spicy and zippy, making a nice balance to
the slight sweetness.
One must-try is their pasta
(about $10). They have a homemade tomato sauce that stacks
up against anything Europe could dish out. This is one stunning,
mother-of-all sauces, and their penne pasta with meatballs
is a seriously addictive dish. 200 N. Hemlock and Second

Inspired!
Café. A café inside an art gallery
creates more than a place to simply sit, sip and down truly
inspired cuisine, with bright colors, a multitude of levels
of things to look at and intriguing furniture. All this
comes with a green slant and emphasis on local organic ingredients,
including fair trade, shade-grown coffee. Munch on handcrafted
flatbreads (about $7), like the Italian (herb infused mozzarella,
goat cheese, parmesan and sundried tomatoes), or the Southwestern
(spiced beans, corn salsa, pepper jack cheese), or the savory
Indian (curried sweet potato, mango, goat cheese). On-site
baked goods include Gorgonzola walnut bread (half loaf,
$7; full loaf $12), as well as other fine breads and muffins.
Fruit plates available too. To drink you’ll find a
large menu of gourmet teas, as well as fine wines, imported

Dooger's
One
of the most celebrated seafood eateries on the coast is
Dooger's, in Seaside, Long Beach, Washington and Cannon
Beach - and most recently in Warrenton. You could begin
with fairly inexpensive breakfasts, with most dishes around
$5, and nothing over $9. Standards like pancakes, waffles,
steak & eggs and omelettes are in great abundance. But
they specialize in some interesting seafood breakfast items,
as well as drool-inducing delight called the "Hobo
Scramble" - that blends your choice of meat with eggs,
mushrooms, celery, onions, tomato and green pepper (about
seven bucks).
Their
lunch and dinner selections are enormous. Lunch entrees
are $7 to $11, featuring a large array of former ocean-dwellers,
including calamari, petrale sole, rock shrimp, catfish,
scallops, clams and smoked salmon, among others. Sandwich
selections - about $5 - include many of the usual meat goodies,
as well as seafood.
Dinner
is all about the seafood, with the large selection mentioned
above, except they come with salad, and a choice of other
items. These large dishes are hearty, with fish n' chips
in the form of halibut, salmon or cod. Oysters, catfish,
halibut or sea scallops might come sautéed, pan-fried,
grilled, poached or in a Cajun style, depending on what
you order. There are crab legs, lobster, filet mignon and
burgers too. Dinners are available as a regular meal or
a lighter, two-third sized version that's less expensive.
Regular dinners are anywhere from $11. 95 (for fish 'n'
chips) to $20 for more extravagant seafood platters. There's
a sizable fettuccini menu too, from $12 to $18. 1371 S.
Hemlock. (503) 436-2225.

Left
Coast Siesta
Tasty,
inexpensive and innovative are the key words. Glorious enchiladas
or burritos come stuffed with ingredients in an intriguing
and unforgettable recipe that's a combo of spices, herbs
and one spunky sauce. There are tacos that are much larger
than you'll expect, and other Mexican goodies as well. Most
items are $4 to $8, and most single items are meals in themselves.
You won't go away hungry. With a little bit more coin, you
can double up or triple up on items. You can choose between
a great number of ingredients, and how hot you want your
Mexi-delicacy to be. Outdoor dining on the porch is something
you must experience, with some lovely views of the ocean
in the distance. It's a famous little eatery on the coast
- and for good reason. 288 Laneda Ave. (503) 368-7997.

Sea
Shack.This
lovely gem stands out for dockside dining. Here, grab a
bite to eat and watch the bay. Sunsets here are one of the
big hidden secrets on the coast, with the still waters of
Nehalem Bay reflecting the light in a way that's unforgettable.
Although you're a few miles inland, you can actually still
hear the ocean. Sometimes, you may spot wildlife, like elk,
cavorting on the land across the way.
The
Sea Shack features an extensive menu that includes a large
selection of famous seafood items, including interesting
stuff like a Bucket of Chili Shrimp (in a spicy broth) or
the enormous Sea Shack Platter (consisting of all of whatever
seafood they have on hand, made to order, for $30.)
There
are cheese jalapeno fries, luscious soups, various sandwiches,
steaks, chicken and pastas. And if that isn't enough, its
bar is one of the coziest and friendliest on the North Coast.

One of the best views on the
entire Oregon coast: their outdoor dining and its ocean
vistas and breezes cannot be beat. Right next to the main
wayside of Rockaway Beach, the Blue Water features a stunning
array of NW and coastal cuisine favorites, done with a warming,
downhome style. Classy pastas that lean towards seafood,
a variety of seafood platters that lean towards out-of-this-world,

dishes all have an upscale twist ($12 to $25). Burgers are
delicious and rather monstrous, such as the weighty house
special that comes with smoked bacon, Tillamook cheddar
and a fried egg (all around $9). Hot sandwiches go some
exciting places, such as the Cajun Muffuleta (all around

Karla's
Smokehouse & D'Max BBQ
One
cooks the stuff on land; the other handles the stuff from
the sea. In the last year, the legendary Karla's Smokehouse
teamed up with D'Max BBQ to cover both ends of the Earth's
best animal edibles. Karla's, around for 41 years, sells
some of the finest fresh fish around - caught at sea and
then flash frozen there. The goodies here include Sashimi-quality
salmon, halibut and ling cod, as well as other selections.
You can get these delectables uncooked, smoked or served
cooked on the premises. Then, along with Cape Meares Gourmet
Oyster, you can also grab fresh oysters from the Northwest.
From
the giant van outside, D'Max BBQ serves insanely delicious
barbecued delights, like pulled pork, turkey, beef brisket
and ribs - usually between $6 and $9. They marinate the
meats for about 24 hours, then smoke them for around 10
hours. With the pork ribs, the result is barbecue that is
rich, juicy and very tasty. You can get a sampler for 12
bucks: called "A Little Bit of Everything." D'Max
is an experience not to be missed on the coast, and probably
alone worth the drive to Rockaway. 2010 Hwy 101. (503)-355-2362

Oyster, Bay City
It's hard to get fish fresher than this,
as it's processed right here after coming in from the sea.
At the end of the dock here, it's probably Bay City's only
recognizable feature, with piles of shells near the landward
side. But it's also a famous little family eatery, where
the seafood practically gets shuffled from the sea straight
into your mouth. Soups and salads include many seafood specialties,
of course, including cioppino, chowders, crab Louie and
cheese breads (from $3 to $14). Fish 'n' chips come in various
incarnations, like oysters, halibut, cod, rock fish, prawns
or chicken strips (about $8). Find seafood sandwiches with
shrimp, tuna or crab, as well as burgers, around $9. Finally,
a small but tempting selection of dinners includes pan fried
oysters, fillets of salmon or halibut, sautéed scallops
and other goodies around $12. Stunning views of the bay
- during the summer you can sit outside and take in the
sea air. All sorts of fresh seafood and flavorings on sale
to take home. Also visit their Portland and Newport locations.
